How are Drupal Initiatives Created?

Drupal Initiatives

Before we go into updates from each initiative, let’s review the process by which Drupal initiatives are formulated.

Members of the Drupal community gather to work on various projects, such as Drupal core themes, contributed modules, themes, and distributions. Most of these projects are planned as initiatives involving an entire group of people focused on a specific issue.

The Drupal initiative has three major phases:

  • Proposed: The initiative was suggested by Dries or by the Drupal community members.
  • Planned: Specific plans, including goals, objectives, and a group, are assembled for the initiative
  • Active: The team gets to the task of achieving its vision

Most initiatives are community-based. However, a handful of them become strategic initiatives. Strategic initiatives are selected by Dries Buytaert, Drupal’s co-founder as well as Project Lead, according to the following requirements:

  • This initiative will result in an essential breakthrough for Drupal.
  • It’s tied to reliable data, market research, as well as Drupal’s vision
  • It’s a high-priority task that needs focused resources
  • It requires collaboration between several stakeholders

Let’s take a closer look at some of Drupal’s initiatives’ wonderful achievements and the hard work going on behind the scenes.

Admin UI Initiative

Drupal is famous for its ability to empower users to develop complicated solutions. However, historically, this capability has been accompanied by an arduous learning curve. In the end, Drupal has higher entry barriers, and many users aren’t making the most of its potential.

The Admin UI initiative aims to make Drupal the preferred tool for ambitious site builders by delivering a simple user interface that is more intuitive and easy to use. The specific goals are:

  • Enhancing the functionality of fields
  • A better navigation experience
  • The modernization of The UI design and the information architecture
  • Implementing features that have been successful with Gin (an experiment in the admin theme)
  • Offering more options for customizations, such as accent colors and dark mode
  • Designing Project Browser module Project Browser module
  • Implementing the same-page previews for editors of content

Admin Toolbar Initiative

The Drupal administration menu, referred to in the industry as “the toolbar,” has maintained its appearance and functionality over the years, with just a few small changes to its design and layout. Its Admin Toolbar initiative aims to provide a better user experience to content editors and developers and make it easier for them to use Drupal.

Specific features of the brand-new toolbar include:

  • New information architecture
  • Smooth animations
  • Consistent spacing
  • Modern design
  • Accessibility above WCAG standards

The Admin Toolbar team has already completed an extensive amount of designing, testing, iteration, and prototyping. This is why the new toolbar has the ability to be collapsible and has a vertical and horizontal layout that has received positive comments from users.

There’s plenty of work to be completed. The drupal development company is searching for people who can assist in revamping the menus for creating content, conducting additional UX and accessibility tests, overseeing the beta release, and correcting bugs.

Config Validation Initiative

Configuration management was added in Drupal 8, making it simpler to deploy and monitor controlled modifications to configurations and code. It separates content from configuration management. For instance, you could transfer changes to a blog’s content type from a development environment into the live environment without affecting the blog posts on the live site.

Drupal 8 also introduced validation constraints and an API-first strategy. However, there was a gap in the link: it was impossible to alter the configuration using the Drupal REST or JSON API since only content entities were subject to validation constraints.

This Config Validation initiative aims to eliminate that gap. The final aim is to make 100% of Drupal’s fundamental configurations validatable and improve the efficiency of managing configurations. This will allow us to ensure that changes to the configuration are made in a clean manner using an API and provide greater visibility into conflicts while they hire drupal developers to collaborate on the configuration.

These enhancements lay the foundation for more efficient deployments, automated updating, and even headless software. Although it’s not a major initiative, it could support a variety of strategic initiatives, including Recipes and Automatic Updates.

When it was last updated in 2022, just 4.5 percent of all configuration types were validatable. This percentage has grown to 8.8 percent. In addition, the rate of config types that are not fully validatable has increased from 27% to 53%!!

Localize Port Initiative

Localize.drupal.org is a website on which users can assist in translating Drupal’s interface into over 100 different languages. This is extremely useful in ensuring that the admin UI is translated into the native language of your content writers. It plays an important role in making Drupal more accessible to anyone around the world by increasing accessibility and a greater variety of users. It allows you to use Drupal with the language you prefer and instantly see an interface in your own language.

Localize Port is a Localize Port initiative overhauling the Drupal Translations website with the intention of unifying translator communities and streamlining the contribution process. It’s also aiming to recognize translators and ensure that they’ll get credit for contributions included in their Drupal.org profiles for their work in translation.

The project is in its first stage: moving the website from Drupal 7 to Drupal 10. The next phase will bring improvements to the platform, like improved UI stats and a multilingual online glossary tool. The plan is to revive an old Localization Client module, which allows users to upload translations to the local version of the platform.

GitLab CI Initiative

Alongside improvements to Drupal itself, the initiative is designed to provide a better user experience when creating code for Drupal. By making writing, testing, and deploying codes easier, we are encouraging developers to participate and make their work efficient. One instrument modern drupal developers for hire are looking for is called Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery.

GitLab CI is a well-known tool that allows the CI/CD pipelines to automate testing to confirm changes made to code and assure the quality of code. These include compatibility testing to test different variations of Drupal core and various environments, as well as merging requests for contribution projects.

GitLab CI replaces DrupalCI, which is currently deprecated in Drupal Core. It offers better maintainability, extensibility, and detailed reports. It’s available to all contributed modules, and implementing it could not be simpler. You can add a predefined template via the UI with only a few clicks, and you do not need to write one sentence of code.

Many hours of work have been done to improve GitLab’s CI performance. The contributors have improved the run time so that it’s two times as fast as previously, and some runs run under 10 minutes, which is barely enough time to take coffee breaks!

The initiative needs volunteers to assist in following up on bugs and improvements, trying out PHP and database versions in combination, adding GitLab CI contrib modules, and shifting from merge requests to patches.

Project Browser Initiative

Project Browser is a module that empowers users to quickly browse, filter, read, and download the most appropriate modules that meet their requirements without ever leaving the Drupal admin interface. The concept behind it has been on the Drupal issue queue since the beginning of 2018, and it was officially declared a strategic initiative in 2021.

Its team functions as two distinct groups: one group is responsible for the development of the product, while the second group is responsible for influencing the intended audience.

The second team also noticed that the information on drupal.org needed to be geared toward making the information on projects easy to find and digestible through a project search. The team identified three key factors: icons, short descriptions, and categorization. They used them for all of the 100 most popular modules. Members of this second team could help by providing descriptions for a few modules with no considerable time commitment.
